Nail biting is a very visible sign of anxiety.
Not dissimilar in origin to overeating or smoking. It is an oral habit that is present to appease inner distress. If you are a nail biter you are very adept at hiding your nails, somehow able to keep the top of your fingers hidden from view. You may use false nails but underneath you know the truth.
Along with nail biting, skin picking can be an issue. Again, it is an attempt to soothe oneself – to stop the anxious feeling in the stomach, the fast heart beat and shallow breathing. By biting your nails and/or picking the skin, it is a physical act that for one millisecond there is nothing to bother you. But as soon as you leave your trance like state, you feel guilty for yet again having bitten your nails.
I can help you to stop the self mutilation of nail biting – that is correct, it is another form of self harm, self cannabilism.
With hypnotherapy (a focused concentration in a relaxed state) and NLP (neuro linguistic programming), you can unlearn the habit of nail biting. The mind has this behaviour as a way to soothe you but you are not a baby, needing a pacifier, you are a grown man/woman and you can learn to be more at ease with the situations that now trigger your nail biting – whether the trigger is person, place or situation, if you want to stop biting your nails (and the skin picking), I can help you but you have to want to stop.
Sometimes nail biting can just be a bad habit and responds very simply in a few sessions. There are times when hypno-analysis is required – getting to the root of the distress that made nail-biting a habit.
Nail biting is a symptom not a cause.
Think about how you want your nails to look:
- how it would be to see nails you were proud of.
- wouldn’t it feel great to no longer feel the need to hide your nails?
- what would it be like to not use nail biting as a “thinking” time or as a self soothing mechanism.
- how many pen tops have you chewed?
Aren’t you worth that?
