- Know your audience and tailor your talk to their needs, their fears, their aspirations.
- Remember your audience wants to enjoy your talk.
- Practice, practice, practice your speech in front of the mirror.
- Make sure you remember the KISS principle – Keep It Simple Stupid unless you are of course giving a technical presentation.
- Record your speech, how does it sound?
- Present yourself appropriately to your audience – image is everything!
- Believe in your topic. It will be obvious if you don’t.
- Know your speech by heart. Use notes for glancing.
- Remember the 3 second rule – make eye contact with someone in the audience for 3 seconds. Do this a couple of times with different audience members and with the audience as a whole.
- Speak, listen, respond – always be ready to adjust and adapt.
- If giving hand-outs, let the audience know in advance so they can decide about note-taking.
- Don’t drink before your presentation.
- Have a good ending – always leave them wanting more.
- Circulate afterwards.
