For adults and children alike, stammering can have detrimental effects on self esteem and confidence. Problems will be with certain letters and try as you might to avoid them, you will at some time have to use the words. Avoidance is not a solution and will actually add to the anxiety when you do have finally use the word. Hypnosis can help to get rid of the fear associated with speaking in front of others.
Hypnosis works by concentrating on the problem letters and finding a solution. This needs to be addressed in the subconscious mind, it is where our habits, our reactions or reminders of how to be in certain situations are stored. Conscious dealing with stammering is lost as soon as you are in a triggering situation. Theory is great but you need the practical application. By working with your mind, we can reprogramme how you want to be and let go of the need to stammer or fall over words.
Did you know that sufferers do not stammer while in hypnosis? It is because they are in a relaxed state.
Anxiety and panic and anticipating the difficulty with the word make life difficult. Blushing becomes part of the panic due to self consciousness. So, now you are dealing with the stammering, panic and blushing!
The most wonderful “side effect” of hypnosis is the relaxation element. The subconscious mind is being programmed to be in a relaxed and calm state while using the problem letters.
What do I do with clients:
- make a sentence with the words beginning with the problem letters. The client repeats the statement over and over easily and gently – the purpose is a confidence boost from saying the words with problem letters. and most importantly a signal to the subconscious mind – being relaxed with the letters.
- Efforts are made with word pacing, to slow down the speech – the desire to “get the words over with” may trigger you to talk very fast. Whether excited or anxious, the focus is on speaking clearly and easily with a confident delivery. Breathing is fast and can lead to “gulping” of air which exacerbates the panic.
Let hypnosis give you the confidence and ability to overcome stammering. There are times when it is necessary to go back to the sensitizing event which caused you to feel uncomfortable when talking out loud in front of others but much of the focus is on how you want to be and what needs to change inside your mind and consequently your body to create an ease inside you. Remember where your mind goes, your body will follow – if your focus is on panic, then the body panics which affects your speech. If you can panic then you can do calm, you just need to reprogramme your mind with the new, improved information.
