Smokers – Cut your tax bill for 2010

If you smoke you could be adding an extra €3,000 to your tax bill next year.

As we all know the Minister for Finance is busy preparing yet another budget. While we don’t know exactly what he will be purposing we do know that in these times of financial difficulties cutting government expenditure and raising taxes is high on his agenda. And one of the “old reliables” of many a passed budget is the price of a packet of cigarettes.

Earlier in the year the Irish Cancer Society, ASH Ireland and the Irish Heart Foundation  called for a €2 price hike to the packet of cigarettes. If the Minister follows that advice he would push the average price of a packet 20 cigarettes over the €10 mark.

The average smoker will smoke a packet of 20 a day, add in a few extra over the weekend and you could be spending over €4,000 per year on Cigarettes next year. And to add insult to injury over ¾(78%) of that price is tax that goes straight into the government’s coffers.

Everyone knows that smoking can damage your health. Everyone knows that you can end up smelling like an old ashtray. And every smoker always complains when the price of a packet of cigarettes goes up in the budget.

But this year instead of just complaining why not decide to take the plunge and kick the habit once and for all.
