Body language – it’s telling others how you feel without you even having to open your mouth!
Did you know that communication is 55% is body language, 38% tone and only 7% words.
When angry, your muscles tense up and as this is a primal response, the function of the increased blood flow to arms and legs is to make you look bigger and more menacing as well as giving power to the arms and legs to fight. Your body language actually has a function. It’s effect is to make you do something because somehow your values have been broken or threatened. An injustice has been done. Your tone of voice will be threatening and usually low pitched to mimic the growling effect of animals and appear dominant. The subconscious mind is running the programme that suits this emotion. Your body language is following your mind’s direction, the emotional rollercoaster that is going on inside.
In the same way, if you are feeling insecure, your body language will give these indicators, usually hunched shoulders and head down in an effort to hide. The body will be weak looking in an effort not to take up space or be noticed. It is the chameleon look for the insecure – to hide and blend in. Your tone of voice will be high pitched and the fast paced in an effort to get it over with. Your voice will also be quiet. The tendency here to be more high pitched is to mimic a little girl – it is a preservation tool. If I sound like a child, no-one will hurt me.
Anxiety sufferers will demonstrate body language that is primed to run off, giving a fidgety appearance. They are on high alert and will demonstrate the fast paced talking with a high pitch quite similar to the insecure sufferer but the difference is to be able to escape. Interestingly, anxiety sufferers will tend to position their body and/or feet towards the escape route.
Communication needs your mind and body thinking and talking the same thing.
if there is any type of fear running in the background, this will drown out your words. Unless you can control the emotional state. As you will have notice only 7% of communication are the actual words spoken. You can see how important it is to get the body language and tone of voice under control. Your words may have the right sound bites. However, they are lost if the body language and tone work against you.
What tools are available to you?
I can help you to transform your body language and tone so that all parts of you communicate the story you want to tell no matter the setting:
for interviews – the preparation is on how you want to come across. How to look like you belong in the organisation. You need to be the physical representation of your CV.
in social situations – the work focuses on you being more comfortable with groups of people. It is learning to look and feel relaxed. How to be part of the group rather than an observer.
for presentation skills – you have the knowledge and you want to be relaxed. This means being able to access the high performance adrenaline rather than becoming swamped by anxiety or fear. While the attention is on you so you can be less self conscious and answer any questions directed at you.
I use hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to create the change you want to make. We are reprogramming your mind so you see yourself how you want to be in the situations that up until now have created anxiety inside you.
