We need sleep. Animals sleep, babies sleep, even Mother Nature sleeps.
Sleep quality is important for re-balancing of the internal stress levels. We need to sleep in a cycle of 3 hours which is made up of two 90 cycles.
Hypnosis, in itself, is a relaxation and this is helpful in shutting your mind down. It is not a case of trying to empty your mind or to stop thinking, we cannot do that.
Hypnos – is the Greek for sleep!
But we can recognise what thoughts are floating through and decide not to engage with them. Sometimes bad habits have become instilled and we look at sleep hygiene, your preparation for bed, the lay-out etc. Your mind can sometimes dread going to bed because you anticipate having a disturbed sleep and wonder how you will function the following day. Have you ever noticed how your difficulty in sleeping is worse when something “major” is happening the following day? This is the anxiety element.
Is anxiety contributing to your sleep problems?
You have an element of anxiety or tension which is interfering with your sleep. The anticipation of not being able to sleep creates an inner frustration which heightens the stress response inside and your mind goes into “high alert” as the stress response has triggered “threat detected, threat detected”.
So part of the therapy is changing the expectation. Our focus instead becomes on resting rather than the major goal of sleep – it may be too far a leap so step by step makes sense to the mind. You can learn how to rest – so straight away, the internal stress alarm is not being activated.
The other aspect of hypnotherapy to help with insomnia is to look at what caused a disruption to your sleeping pattern, if this is applicable. Some people were never “good” sleepers. But for any change in a sleeping pattern, something must have happened or was said to cause unease. And we look for any possibilities and deal with the worries and concerns.
There are times that worries are real, a loved one is dying or is in some difficulty, we find a way to still feel sympathetic but not so much that it disturbs your sleep as you need your energy to deal with what happens or be there as a support. One of my clients, a grandmother, worried about her teenager grandson who was mixing with a bad crowd. He was a source of so many sleepless nights for her. We had to lift her overwhelming sense of responsibility. The grandson had parents who worried about him. She was making herself ill with worry. Over a few sessions, her anxiety lessened. I gave her some coping strategies to share with her son so they could help the youngster. She had felt powerless before. She didn’t want to be seen as interfering. So she returned to normal sleeping.
You may be someone who is a light sleeper and any noise, dogs barking, alarms sounding, upset your sleep. You “try” not to listen but they just seem to get loud and be more irritable – the law of reversed effect in full action! It is learning how to use these sounds to aid your relaxation.
Whatever your reason for experiencing sleep difficulties, I can help with hypnotherapy. This is from someone with a high energy and who previously had difficulty in “calming” down and quietening her mind. I had tried yoga, meditation but hypnotherapy was the one therapy where my mind could stop racing. To sleep we need our mind and body to both be ready to relax. Any worries or concerns to be given over the subconscious mind to be unwound with solutions coming forward. Your subconscious mind is like a 6 year old child, always helpful if we give it permission, otherwise it forms its own idea of how to deal with things!
Call me to overcome your sleeping difficulties.
Let me help you get back to sleep. You know the effects sleeping tablets can have, the grogginess, lack of energy. Let your mind re-learn or indeed, learn a new way of being. We are fortunate that we have minds that are open to change to experiencing new ways of being. But we have to be in relaxed, with our brain waves in alpha to create change. Then the natural progression to delta and theta levels occurs.
