When you develop a phobia, anxiety has attached itself to the fear and this fear takes on a new life and becomes conditioned by association so any e.g. dog or plane will set off a series of stress responses in your body and you only see to see them in the distance! When you start to avoid the perceived “trigger” then a phobia develops. So when you avoid the situation or “trigger”, your mind is rewarded by the anxiety going and your avoidance strengthens this connection in your mind. With hypnosis and NLP (neuro linguistic programming, we are doing the same thing but creating the positive opposite so that when confronted with what used to be your trigger you are calm and relaxed – sometimes fears and phobias have very little to do with the plane, the elevator etc. it is what it represents – loss of control, fear of failure etc. But developing new ways of behaving and stopping the negative self talk, you develop confidence from empowering yourself and no longer being controlled and limited in your life.
