Stop Smoking

You can stop smoking in one hour! No cravings, no irritability just pride at your ability to finish with the habit of smoking as though it never existed!

What hypnotherapists do

Hypnotherapists do not “rescue” you from whatever problem you  have whether it is anxiety, smoking, nail biting etc.  Your hypnotherapist helps you  to discover or learn more resourceful ways of thinking, behaving, acting, responding so that you are empowered.  It is only with finding these resources from within will you ever truly overcome your problem.

So whatever emotional upset or habit you want to break, let me be your guide and call me on 086 1038892 now.

Self Help and Hypnosis

When you are feeling unsure of yourself and negative thoughts are roaming around your mind - do they have a voice? (And I don’t mind auditory hallucinations). Turn up the volume and listen closely - is your voice but not your words, do you recognise the voice? No doubt if you recognise the voice it will be a significant adult from when you were a child, an overcritical parent, a frightening teacher or whoever. Childhood and around the age 6/7 we “learn” to feel bad about ourselves. At school everything must be uniform i.e. the same - don’t stand out, dress the same as everyone, do this now, do it this way. We learn that some will be better than others at different tasks - compare and see how you are? Negative comments about underperforming in school. Children learn in different ways and at different speeds. What messages did you receive about you?

Do you remember waiting anxiously for the school report in the summer? How would your parents react? Tension and anxiousness and from what age? - 9/10/11 earlier?

This is why we “learn” to dread/fear performance situations whether it is addressing a group at work, going for interview, meeting someone new - we bring all the tensions and anxieties about performance received as a child and we are in reality reverting to that scared little child, waiting for the approval/disapproval of the “adult”.

What was learned can be re-learned to a more productive way of behaving. Self help and hypnotherapy can help you undo this damage but only if you really want to. Some people may be happy to continue living in their comfort zone while logically “trying” to change themselves. These people are going through the motions because there is a contentment in knowing and staying where you are now. Change is fear but necessary fear to move forward to no longer stay in a quagmire but really to embrace change and changing fear to excitement because you can do that. Anxiety and excitement have the same root it just depends on which route you take.

Depression and Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

Can hypnosis help depression? Well, it helps if you know why you are depressed. Are you depressed because life has not worked out like you expected and you are frustrated that you haven’t achieved what you wanted? Perhaps you have always been depressed or an element of depression. With hypnotherapy (therapy carried out using hypnosis) you must have a idea of what you want to achieve. Many of us know what we don’t want but how many know what exactly we do want. If your mind has been enveloped with negativity, it can be difficult to see any light. Positivity and looking forward take a great deal of work. Any good hypnotherapist will ensure that your plan for the future is well formed form, that it is possible for you to achieve the little steps that grow to big steps. It is like any plan, it must be SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time specific. Like anything worth having, it is a journey and if you are sure that the life you lead now is not the way you wish to continue then look at hypnotherapy. As a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, you get the benefit of my experience in ensuring that you stay on track. We take one aspect that is the most bothersome and work on this. This in turn has a knock on positive effect in other areas of your life. Isn’t it worth the effort, to make positive changes in your life?

Self Esteem and Hypnotherapy

As a child we receive a lot of external messages about how we are perceived, a baby learns to cry (and different cries) depending on whether they need changing, feeding or comfort. So as we grow and develop understanding we look to the adults around us to tell how we are perceived. If this is negative - that you are not good enough or your stupid or you’ll never amount to anything - what picture of yourself do you think you have? Does this mean it’s true? Consider the source of information? Now that you are an adult, can you see how the information gained about yourself from the outside world may have been flawed? Did you live up to (or down to) the expectations? As you are reading this, I suspect you want to change - why because you are querying the validity of the information.

Low self esteem is about having little internal value. Only trusting the negative imagines sent your way. How many times have you accepted a criticism as being true but dismiss a positive, for example, doing a good job.

I will be doing a series of posts on self esteem over the next few days. There is a lot to take in and so I want to break it up to ease digestion.

I always assume the reader is looking to make a change. Hypnotherapy can help facilitate the change. In a nutshell, we can quickly access the subconscious mind where all the memories that condensed to make you feel the way you do are stored. Only your subconscious mind had help you develop a more positive attitude and belief in yourself. The beauty of hypnosis and hypnotherapy is that it is a short course of therapy using hypnosis (no more than 10 weeks) is all that is needed to set you up for a different path in life. No matter how many negative images we receive, I hope that you can believe that someone somewhere showed you some positive attention but you dismissed and believe that no-one ever saw potential in you.

I would like to end on this note: you must realise that your mind is like a heat seeking missile - what you focus on comes to be. Look at the negative and everything will be negative, look for the positive and a whole new wonderful world opens up.

Stress and Hypnosis

Did you know that hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help you to manage stress and control and remove its negative effects on your life?  We identify where the stress comes from, you learn relaxation techniques specific to the areas in your life you experience stress.  It is all about you and how hypnosis (e.g. listening to your CD while going to sleep rather trying to find 25/30 minutes in an already busy day) is helping you to manage and control stress.  Perhaps you find become angry easily and have feelings of frustration.  Backache, neck ache and tension headaches seem to be present more often than not.  This is your body telling you to slow down, take stock and deal with the inner stress.  Physical manifestations such as the above are the subconscious mind telling you to make a change.  One client was at his wits’ end when he came to see me - irritable at home and work, dreaded going home (2 young boys and new baby), angry and aggressive, hitting cupboards, sleep not good.  Within a week of seeing me, he was like a different person.  He had had the best sleep while listening to the CD (a positive benefit regardless of the content).  Lack of sleep can have detrimental effects on your life.  He had been using his calming techniques in situations where previously he would have flared up.  By the end of time 5/6 weeks later.  He was focused, brighter and things were in perspective.  The frustration was gone, he enjoyed good quality time with his  children and even had date nights with his wife.  He has learned to think before acting, controlling the anxiety rather than it controlling him.

As an aside, he suffered from irritable bowel syndrome and his symptoms which had been active obviously due to his stress improved within the first week without even mentioning the digestive system to quieten down!

Stop Smoking with Hypnosis

You are all aware of the ill health effects of smoking, you know it is becoming more anti-social so why do you continue to smoke?  At a subconscious level you are gaining benefit (or so it seems) from that little white stick.  Very few people have the will power to stop smoking cold turkey.  Using hypnosis you must want to stop, feel you can stop and you look forward to the changes.  What’s the first thing you think of when you think about quitting smoking - irritability, cravings, mood swings, failure?  By visiting a qualified hypnotherapist you are getting help to uncover why you need to smoke - this is at a subconscious level and can only be resolved at a subconscious level.  If you started smoking as a teenager, it was important to belong to your peer group, so your subconscious mind “helped” you to continue smoking and then it became automatic.  If you are in your 30s  now - you don’t need peer approval so the reasons for smoking are no longer necessary but your subconscious mind has no logic so you need to “suggest” better reasons for a smokefree life than a smoking one.

Remember, to stop smoking or to overcome any unwanted habit you have to want to stop, feel you can stop and to call me at 086 1038892!  Offices Portlaoise and Baggot Street.

Motivation and Hypnosis

Motivation is wanting to make a change for yourself and not for anyone else. It is about feeling the “inner strength” needed to say no to chocolate or after a long day’s work, the ability to go to the gym or for a run rather than slouch down in front of the t.v. No amount of “shoulds” or “ought to” will motivate you. To keep motivation going, it needs to be supported. You can do this by visualisation exercises (this is where hypnosis comes in) and seeing yourself as you want to be. You must also understand that the change will not occur overnight! And that it takes work on your part. You must also be whole-hearted in your effort. “I’ll try it” is not good enough. The word “try” allows failure as an option. No champion sportsman says “I’ll try”. Indeed not, they use visualisation techniques to see themselves in glory and each step it takes to achieve their glory. And finally for today, you must believe it is possible for you to change.

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? What would you change about your life, about you?

Perhaps you really don’t know – it’s too big a question that your mind really can’t take it on board. Give it time. Mull it over. Write a list and like Santa check it twice and then again. Re-arrange and re-edit. Then when you think that is it – how can you achieve it? What steps need to be taken? Break it into categories, time line them. Remember it is this or something better.

Remember when you were a child – what did you want to be? I bet there were no boundaries, no limits. The world was your oyster. I wanted to be a showjumper, the fact that I couldn’t ride never entered my mind!

When did it change? When did you learn to short-change yourself? What is learned can be unlearned  using hypnosis to re-programme your mind.  People change and wants change. But as adults we limit ourselves, we set up imaginary boundaries. Some of it has to do with circumstance, with our self talk, perhaps getting too many knocks in a row that you can’t raise your head to look up. If you walk around with your head down, how are you ever going to move upwards mentally and physically?

A small question in terms of words but the answer may not be easy to give. The answer may help to clarify why you are unhappy now – because you are not living to your full potential. We get one life and no matter how long you live death is forever. Isn’t it worth taking a few minutes each day to think about what you really want? This exercise is not about making yourself miserable because you can’t achieve whatever the dream is – it is about making changes within yourself with regard to your attention and behaviour to make positive changes. It is about being responsible but taking steps to ensure that this the life you really want to live.

Hypnosis and you.

Hypnosis is a wonderful tool for re-establishing the connection between your conscious mind and your subconscious mind. Over the years we forget that we are actually in control of our emotions and not the other way round! We have learnt to react to situations rather than act appropriately to the situation. We seem to be running around all the time. No time for this, no time for that. The net effect is a feeling of a loss of control - not seeing any way out. Hypnosis helps by helping you to focus on whatever it is you want to change. What’s the biggest issue in your life. All hypnosis is a relaxation and we build on this relaxation to effect change. Along with this, we can rehearse our world as we want it to be not as it is - which is important. Your mind cannot differeniate between what’s real or imagined so if you can see it, your mind can believe it and make it so. Hypnosis is a tool to be used for your benefit, harnessing the power of your own mind to create the future you want. You are always in control. Hypnosis helps to take back the control of your emotions.

Anything is possible, as long you believe in yourself and believe you desire it.
