Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy - How to overcome unwanted habits

With the past it is not the event itself that triggers the unwanted response/habit, it is the meaning we attribute to the event that gives it significance.  for example, when I think of my grandmother, I’m immediately transported to the smell of freshly baked bread and I’m in her kitchen, remembering the love and warmth of it - not the actual technique of making the bread!  When you can see the difference, that’s when we get change happening.

I’ll leave with a quote that I have used before:

“if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got”.

Why hypnosis works

You know that you can have insight and be logical about your problem but it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the blushing, anxiety, stress with attempts to stop smoking, lose weight etc.  Why?  Because we reason with the logical part of the mind, the left side, and where is the hurt that prompted the problem in the first place - it’s in your subconscious mind!  The only way to access your subconscious mind is with the use of hypnosis.  Hypnosis is a deep relaxation where you are fully aware but are just so relaxed you keep you eyes closed.  When in this relaxed state, the subconscious mind will offer up its secrets to the conscious level and in therapy, this can help you to overcome your problem - we find the cause and make it lose its effect!  For suggestion therapy, for stop smoking, wart removal or any of the more habit problems, when you are relaxed, suggestions are offered to the subconscious about new ways of looking at what used to be a problem for you.

Only your subconscious mind knows what caused the problem in the first place and only your subconscious mind can make the change.  But it is not a magic pill or cure.  It is about empowering you.  Internal acceptance and validation help you to become the person you really want to be.  There is no dependant relationship with me.  Solution focused therapy is the method I use so that you are in therapy for the shortest time possible maximum 12 weeks.  That is because we start with your goal and work towards it whether it is to feel relaxed in social situations, relaxed being a non smoker, more confident and assertive - with hypnosis you can your own magic happen and it is a tool for life.

Call me to overcome any unwanted habit or to stop the cycle of anxiety which begets more anxiety so that you are going round and round.  Be free from your problem, you have the power within you and I can help you access it.

Motivation and Hypnosis.

Whatever change you want to make, you need some form of motivation or otherwise you would not change. Make change is never easy whether it is to stop smoking, lose weight, get focused on the job you want, motivation to set up your own business, gain confidence you will need some help. Hypnosis is such a focused tool at your disposal to give you laser focus on what you want. Hypnosis helps to concentrate your mind on that one change. Remember, you can only work on one change at a time (that’s why New Year Resolutions fail - we try too many changes and achieve nothing). Listening to a hypnotic CD/MP3 reminds your subconscious mind that you want to change. The theory is to make change permanent it takes 21 days for it to be fully absorbed by the subconscious mind.

If you are new to hypnosis and hypnotherapy, what has stopped you in the past from fulfilling your goals, was it the little voice in your head telling you that you “don’t deserve it”, “not good enough”, “no time”, “that’s not for you” - you get the drift. If you feel this is the obstacle because the voice gets so loud you must obey it then please consider hypnosis where we can access your subconscious and quieten the voice once and for all.

Do you really want to end your days regretting the things you didn’t do? You can be and/or change anything about yourself that you are not happy with - hypnosis helps you to feel confidence that you can achieve your goals. Sometimes it is easier to choose the safe option and continue to complain and feel sorry for yourself but if you want to change and get the feeling that you can change through hypnosis who knows what you can achieve.

Hypnosis Blushing, Confidence, Anxiety, Stress Management etc.

At the basics of hypnosis and hypnotherapy is to take what works for you and make it better so that the positive outweighs the negative, your thinking process is engaged towards solutions rather than possible problems, you are practical with regard to worrying, you manage stress adequately, concentrate on a pale face so you stop blushing, you act confidence physically and the internal confidence builds inside you.  What happens, one day comes and you haven’t had to think about the steps necessary to stop blushing, stop smoking etc.  Your mind automaticallly (and that is your subconscious mind) goes to positive thoughts.  We all have something that works for us deep down inside.  We have forgotten it.  You have over the years trained your mind to automatically think the worst and this causes anxiety.  Why does it cause anxiety?  Because it is not really who you are.  We should always strive to be better, to push ourselves out of the comfort zone, to see opportunity.  Take what you have that works at any level and build on that so that it thrives with good thoughts, perhaps training or practicing whatever it takes to get it better.

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is therapy carried out under hypnosis which essentially allows you to make change very quickly. The focus is the one change you wish to make in your life and a short, concise and focused therapy to help you build your self reliance. You gain the opportunity to harness the new and re-ignited skills within yourself in the future. It is about raising your self belief that you can be stop smoking, lose weight, get the great job you want, have a family, find a partner, overcome depression and anxiety, stop blushing or whatever change you wish to make.

You must want to make the change and believe that change for you is possible - you don’t have to believe in the process but be open minded. Expect positive change and look forward to positive change! Take a moment right now to write down goals for each area of your life - let’s face it, if you were content as you are now you wouldn’t be reading this. Write down the categories - lifestyle, health, family, relationships, financial, educational - whatever areas are in your life. Then list the goals or aspirations you have in each category. Now the most important is to timeline them so you see at a glance what the most pressing issue is for you. Hypnosis is great to help clarify our thoughts and organize the areas in your life.

Then set out the tasks you need to take to make each goal a reality - do you have to connect with someone, do you have do a course, do you have _________? Again set out a to-do list with these. Remember the day is not over until you can tick off everything on your life. Life being life, no doubt you may be thrown a curve ball but re-arrange the timeline - it’s not set in stone but don’t let things slide because of laziness.

Self Help with Hypnosis

Any self help that uses hypnosis is going to be more successful. Why? Because you must tackle the underlying issues and they are usually anxiety based or a fear that stops you from being the best you can be. Hypnotherapy is therapy using hypnosis to help you make changes a change at a subconscious level. This is where the problem started and as one could, you must “return to the scene of crime”. This return is to help you let go, release unresolved upset, even guilt. Then you rebuild and look forward knowing that the past no longer has a hold over you. All hypnosis is self hypnosis and as such you are learning a valuable self help tool to aid you in making other changes in your life. Some might say that “self help” is an oxymoron if you are actually seeing a therapist, reading books, going on self improvement courses. Any help that helps your inner self is of benefit but as long as you gaining benefit. We can be logical about the way the negative way we behave and have what psychiatrists term “insight” i.e. a good understanding but this does not solve the problem or deal with the symptoms you fee. Why not? Because the hurt to the inner self did not happen on a logical basis - if it did we would not have any problems.

Self help is about healing, letting go of negativity, release guilt. What is the underlying symptom you feel? This can take a little while to untangle as over the years you have added to it. With hypnotherapy we must have a focus - a solution to work towards. One change at a time is necessary and important because the subconscious mind can only deal with one change at a time. Take the time to explore hypnosis to see how it can help with your self help actions.

Shyness and Hypnosis

I read in Dublin’s Metro newspaper that the Oxytocin, a hormone that women produce in labour, is being seen as a salvation for those suffering from shyness.  While it therapy it sounds better than self medicating with alchohol and its disastrous effects, wouldn’t it be better to learn how to control the symptoms from inside instead of relying on something external.  The problem comes from inside and hypnotherapy can help you regain control of the symptoms which to now have been controlling and dominating one’s life in the form of chronic shyness, blushing, sweating profusely, nervousness, shaking.  Imagine the empowerment it would give you by reprogramming your mind, as you would your computer, to manage shyness, learning to even overcome.  Hypnotherapy helps you to uncover the reason for your shyness and then we look to your future as being confident and happy.  By using hypnotherapy which is solution focused a short sharp course (no more than 10 - 12 sessions) can release you from the shyness you experience.

Exercise:  Please read through first.

  • Close your eyes for a few moments;
  • Imagine what life would be like for you to feel comfortable in a group situation whether it is with friends or strangers or both.
  • Add as much detail as possible - hear the sounds, smell the smells and see the pictures.  Add movement - make it as though you are watching a movie/video.
  • You are feeling comfortable, your hands are dry, your stomach is at ease, your heart beats at a normal rhythm, your face is pale.  Feels good, doesn’t it?
  • You are enjoying yourself, feeling comfortable and relaxed.
  • Notice where in your body you feel this good feeling - is it your head, your chest, your stomach (there is no right or wrong answer) and give it a shape and colour.  Make it bigger and brighter so it fills your whole body.  Feeling wonderful.
  • Now open your eyes.
  • How great are your feeling right now and you did this by yourself.

Using hypnotherapy you can learn relaxation techniques and practice visualisation exercises.  The therapy part helps to recall the times when you “learned” to be shy and withdrawing from groups.  Then I help you to re-learn a new way of behaving.

So to overcome shyness and gain confidence and be comfortable in yourself, think about hypnotherapy and the results will speak for themselves.

Motivation and Hypnosis

Motivation is wanting to make a change for yourself and not for anyone else. It is about feeling the “inner strength” needed to say no to chocolate or after a long day’s work, the ability to go to the gym or for a run rather than slouch down in front of the t.v. No amount of “shoulds” or “ought to” will motivate you. To keep motivation going, it needs to be supported. You can do this by visualisation exercises (this is where hypnosis comes in) and seeing yourself as you want to be. You must also understand that the change will not occur overnight! And that it takes work on your part. You must also be whole-hearted in your effort. “I’ll try it” is not good enough. The word “try” allows failure as an option. No champion sportsman says “I’ll try”. Indeed not, they use visualisation techniques to see themselves in glory and each step it takes to achieve their glory. And finally for today, you must believe it is possible for you to change.

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? What would you change about your life, about you?

Perhaps you really don’t know – it’s too big a question that your mind really can’t take it on board. Give it time. Mull it over. Write a list and like Santa check it twice and then again. Re-arrange and re-edit. Then when you think that is it – how can you achieve it? What steps need to be taken? Break it into categories, time line them. Remember it is this or something better.

Remember when you were a child – what did you want to be? I bet there were no boundaries, no limits. The world was your oyster. I wanted to be a showjumper, the fact that I couldn’t ride never entered my mind!

When did it change? When did you learn to short-change yourself? What is learned can be unlearned  using hypnosis to re-programme your mind.  People change and wants change. But as adults we limit ourselves, we set up imaginary boundaries. Some of it has to do with circumstance, with our self talk, perhaps getting too many knocks in a row that you can’t raise your head to look up. If you walk around with your head down, how are you ever going to move upwards mentally and physically?

A small question in terms of words but the answer may not be easy to give. The answer may help to clarify why you are unhappy now – because you are not living to your full potential. We get one life and no matter how long you live death is forever. Isn’t it worth taking a few minutes each day to think about what you really want? This exercise is not about making yourself miserable because you can’t achieve whatever the dream is – it is about making changes within yourself with regard to your attention and behaviour to make positive changes. It is about being responsible but taking steps to ensure that this the life you really want to live.

Anxiety - Hypnosis Helps

All focus (or so it seems) is on you - you feel your face going red, your heart beating as though it is about to jump out your chest (or your mouth), sweating palms, you begin to dissociate, you mouth stops working and you feel as though you are slurring your words.  Do this seem familiar?  You are not alone.  Every dealing with more than one person is an ordeal you anticipate.

What begins to happen is that you anticipate the above happening and you set the image in your mind of being uncomfortable and feeling very nervous and anxiety and hey presto, that is exactly what happens.  And so the vicious circle continues….

Your mind does not know the difference between what is real or what is imagined - you set the standard and it follows suit - after all, it is only doing what you expect.

With hypnosis you are using relaxation and visualisation techniques to help you see and believe yourself being calm and in control.  As with most things, it does take a lot of practice but it does make a huge difference to your life.   Depending on the level of anxiety, hypnotherapy will be the perf
