In a session we are looking for the habitual patterns of smoking i.e. when you automatically reach for a cigarette and are smoking before you realise what’s happening. On questioning you can find out your triggers for smoking and finds alternate ways of which are more positive for you. You needs and reasons for wanting to stop smoking will not be the same as anyone else. So the personalised CD is for your specific needs. Buying a generic CD/MP3 will be tailored to overall reasons that the hypnotherapist has come across in their experience and will be beneficial for habit smokers but if you feel stress is an issue then consider seeing a hypnotherapist face to face.

Your thoughts and Hypnosis

Have you ever noticed that your mood affects how you view things?  If you are feeling happy then everything has a positive slant, you can even see something positive from something negative.  If, however, you are in a low mood (not depressed) but not feeling on top of things, then the universe seems to put more and more obstacles in your way.  Thoughts like “typical, it always happens to me”, “serves me right for doing I was doing something right” will not improve your mood or lift your spirits.  Hypnotherapy helps you become aware of the power of your thoughts and your self thoughts.  If you don’t feel good about yourself, that comes across in your tone of voice, how you hold yourself.  For others, you can put on “a front”, the energy expended not being true to yourself is unreal and they end up feeling worn out and burnt physically and mentally.

What fears do you have about stopping smoking?

  • how will I deal with my stress
  • what will I do with my hands
  • I’ll have no confidence with cigarettes
  • It gives me something to do
  • I’ll put on weight
  • I won’t be able to deal with the cravings and irritability.

Anything familiar? Add whatever else you need to with regard to your fears.

All of these are valid fears - smoking will (if you’re in your 30s) be the most consistent and reliable thing in your life. It will be like losing a friend and for the more chronic smokers (30+ a day) they will, of course be a grieving period. You cannot underestimate the relationship you have had with cigarettes.

But it can change, you can lear a more positive way of dealing with stress, build confidence, deal with your food issues - because the cigarettes do not actually make you the life and soul of the party, relax you or give you something to do - you control you. You can learn to use your time more productively.

Stop Smoking and Hypnosis - what happens in a session?

In a typical stop smoking with hypnosis - one of the questions I ask is:

“what benefit do you get from smoking?”

EVERYONE answers “none”.  But there must be some benefit otherwise you wouldn’t smoke.  While in a deeper trance, I ask the question again - responses will vary from “it helps me with stress”, “I feel more confident with a cigarette in my hand”, “it stops me getting fat”.  With these answers, the client is recognising the benefit cigarettes and smoking has been giving them.  With all hypnosis, the wonderful side effect is relaxation, it will be the only time your mind and body will relax totally.  Suggestions on deep breathing and visualisation techniques on stress reducing or stress proving the client’s life will be added or confidence building techniques.  With regards to the weight - again we do not substitute one oral habit with another, we look at why the client may think they will gain weight if they stop smoking.

In a stop smoking with hypnosis session, the more exploration into the client’s fears of stopping smoking is done, the better the result.

Then we move into the future pacing stage, seeing yourself free from cigarettes, you are a non-smoker and you look and feel great.  You are so proud that you have regained control of your habits and have taken responsibility to remaining and staying a non-smoker.   (Hypnotherapists prefer the term “smokefree” - the positive of non-smoker).

With an image of how you want and desire to be free from cigarettes, a image begins to form inside your mind, just a like a photograph developing, darker at first and then images become more clear until it is so bright and full of colour that you can feel that excitement of having lovely skin, smelling nice, feeling so proud of yourself.  Get that image forming now you are full of energy, breathing is easier, you look great and feel fantastic.

When you know what you want to achieve whether it’s a way of behaving, thinking we can take the steps necessary in order to achieve this.  Whether it is the emotional release that comes with psychotherapy under hypnosis and developing new more resourceful habits, you can make any change you want but you have to be committed to making the change and that you are doing it for you.

Remember if you are pessimistic about the future, then negativity is all that you will see but if you feel, see joy in the future then that is what is in store for you.  It’s like the saying:  if you think you or you think you can’t, you’re right.  Life is a self fulfilling prophesy.

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy - How to overcome unwanted habits

With the past it is not the event itself that triggers the unwanted response/habit, it is the meaning we attribute to the event that gives it significance.  for example, when I think of my grandmother, I’m immediately transported to the smell of freshly baked bread and I’m in her kitchen, remembering the love and warmth of it - not the actual technique of making the bread!  When you can see the difference, that’s when we get change happening.

Why hypnosis works

You know that you can have insight and be logical about your problem but it doesn’t seem to make any difference to the blushing, anxiety, stress with attempts to stop smoking, lose weight etc.  Why?  Because we reason with the logical part of the mind, the left side, and where is the hurt that prompted the problem in the first place - it’s in your subconscious mind!  The only way to access your subconscious mind is with the use of hypnosis.  Hypnosis is a deep relaxation where you are fully aware but are just so relaxed you keep you eyes closed.  When in this relaxed state, the subconscious mind will offer up its secrets to the conscious level and in therapy, this can help you to overcome your problem - we find the cause and make it lose its effect!  For suggestion therapy, for stop smoking, wart removal or any of the more habit problems, when you are relaxed, suggestions are offered to the subconscious about new ways of looking at what used to be a problem for you.

Stop Smoking and Hypnosis

Why do you smoke?  Do you think it helps with stress, keeps your weight down?  Or is it simply something to do.  Some of you may smoke from pure habit - it’s break-time, have a cigarette.  Or perhaps you smoke when you feel anxious or stressed?  If you are thinking about giving up cigarettes, it is important to look at what motivates you to smoke.  Every one knows that smoking is bad for your health but yet people will continue to smoke so hypnosis helps by finding out what is your motivator to smoke.  After all, if you weren’t getting something from cigarettes you wouldn’t smoke.  There is always a subconscious benefit what is termed a secondary benefit.  If you started smoking as a teenager, it is important to belong to your peer group and be like everyone else - there’s the benefit - belonging and being part of a group but when you’re 35 that benefit is no longer relevant except your subconscious mind doesn’t realise that!  With hypnosis, we can look for other ways to give you the benefit without the cigarettes.  Remember you have to want to stop smoking to be successful.

Motivation and Hypnosis.

Whatever change you want to make, you need some form of motivation or otherwise you would not change. Make change is never easy whether it is to stop smoking, lose weight, get focused on the job you want, motivation to set up your own business, gain confidence you will need some help. Hypnosis is such a focused tool at your disposal to give you laser focus on what you want. Hypnosis helps to concentrate your mind on that one change. Remember, you can only work on one change at a time (that’s why New Year Resolutions fail - we try too many changes and achieve nothing). Motivate Yourself with Hypnosis

What plans do you have?  Do you imagine a life different to what you have now?  Do you follow through on  your plans?  Perhaps you never make plans, just drifting one day to the next, fed up that you don’t have all you want.

Planners:  When you make plans, it is important to write them.  Divide up all the areas of your life and make a list of what you would like to achieve.  Then go through the items on your list and write down what steps you need to take to get your goals - do you need advice, further education, a business plan, or just time.  Now time your goals for achievement and within that set a time table for each step.  Remember a goal should be just out of reach, not out of sight.

As you work through your goals, give yourself a treat with each step achieved - it’s an added incentive but don’t make it about food or alcohol.  Each step you take towards your goals will make you feel fantastic, the sense of empowerment is unbelieveable because you are making your goal in to reality.

Drifters:  Perhaps some of you don’t plan.  Things just happen and you go with the flow sometimes good and sometimes bad.  What makes you fearful of making plans?  Perhaps it’s a fear that you won’t be disappointed if you don’t achieve your goal.  If you are happy like this, good for you but if not, take some time to understand why you don’t set goals.
